2nd Annual Women in Law Program: Propelling Women into Leadership Roles in the Legal Profession

Maud Murray is the Legal Director at the Legal Services Branch for the Ministry of Energy, Northern Development and Mines (Energy), the Ministry of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade, and the Red Tape and Regulatory Burden Reduction Office. In this role, Maud leads a team of counsel and business professionals who provide comprehensive, responsive, innovative and high quality legal support to its clients on operations of government, program development, regulatory burden reduction, sector regulation and other policy initiatives. Maud is a trusted advisor to the executive management teams for each of her client groups and brings strong leadership skills and legal experience in the areas of trade, public law, regulatory & compliance, procurement, legislative drafting and interpretation, crown liability, duty to consult, corporate commercial and intellectual property law.

Prior to becoming Legal Director, Maud was Deputy Director at the Legal Services branch for Ministry of Government and Consumer Services/Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration and Ministry of International Trade (2015-2017) and the Deputy Director of the Legal Services Branch of the Ministry of Agriculture, and Food and the Ministry of Rural Affairs (2013-2015). Maud began her public service career in law in 2005 as a summer law student and then as counsel at the Crown Law Office – Civil.

She earned her Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and Hispanic Studies from Trent University, her Master of Arts in Comparative Literature from University of Western Ontario and her LLB from Osgoode Hall Law School. Maud was called to the Ontario Bar in 2007.

Maud is a Canadian with a proud West African heritage, having immigrated from Ghana with her parents when she was 10 years old. Her favorite people are her husband (Marty) and young two children (Thomas and Simone) and she is eagerly awaiting the arrival of the newest family member, a labradoodle puppy.

Julia Shin Doi is General Counsel and Secretary of the Board of Governors of Ryerson University. As an Executive Group member, she provides legal and governance advice and has operational responsibility for access to information, privacy, records management, and compliance. Julia leads a team of lawyers and professionals, and advises the board.

Julia is also a member of the Board of Directors of Ryerson Futures Inc. and a past member of the national Board of Canadian Universities Reciprocal Insurance Exchange.

Julia is an adjunct professor at Osgoode Hall Law School where she has taught Legal Drafting since 2001, and at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Law, where she teaches Applied Contract Law in the LL.M. program. She is also an instructor in Ryerson’s Law Practice Program. Her past roles include: director of the Osgoode Business Clinic, assistant director of the Osgoode LL.M. in Business Law, and instructor of Osgoode Professional Development's Commercial Legal Drafting Workshop. Julia teaches contract drafting to lawyers through the Canadian Corporate Counsel Association, Spring Training Workshop. She is an Executive in Residence for the Certified In-House Counsel - Canada designation offered by the Canadian Corporate Counsel Association and University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management.
