Rebecca Durcan

Rebecca Durcan is a partner at Steinecke Maciura LeBlanc. Rebecca is also a Bencher of the Law Society of Ontario. She attended Queen’s University to study history and obtained her law degree from the University of Windsor in 2000. In 2006, Rebecca completed her Masters in Health Law from Osgoode Hall. In 2016 Rebecca obtained her Certificate in Risk Management from the University of Toronto.

Rebecca acts as general counsel, prosecution counsel and independent legal counsel to several Ontario regulators.

Rebecca co-authored the Annotated Statutory Powers Procedure Act with her partner Julie Maciura. Rebecca regularly speaks about regulatory issues at the Canadian Network of Agencies for Regulation (CNAR), Council on Licensure, Enforcement and Regulation (CLEAR), Ontario Bar Association, Advocates Society, and Continuing Legal Education of British Columbia. Rebecca is the recipient of the 2019 Lexology Client Choice Award in Public Law.

When not working, Rebecca can be found running after her three boys, Harry, Jude and Teddy.

Maud Murray Legal Director

Maud Murray is the Legal Director at the Legal Services Branch for the Ministry of Energy, Northern Development and Mines (Energy), the Ministry of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade, and the Red Tape and Regulatory Burden Reduction Office. In this role, Maud leads a team of counsel and business professionals who provide comprehensive, responsive, innovative and high quality legal support to its clients on operations of government, program development, regulatory burden reduction, sector regulation and other policy initiatives. Maud is a trusted advisor to the executive management teams for each of her client groups and brings strong leadership skills and legal experience in the areas of trade, public law, regulatory & compliance, procurement, legislative drafting and interpretation, crown liability, duty to consult, corporate commercial and intellectual property law.

Prior to becoming Legal Director, Maud was Deputy Director at the Legal Services branch for Ministry of Government and Consumer Services/Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration and Ministry of International Trade (2015-2017) and the Deputy Director of the Legal Services Branch of the Ministry of Agriculture, and Food and the Ministry of Rural Affairs (2013-2015). Maud began her public service career in law in 2005 as a summer law student and then as counsel at the Crown Law Office – Civil.

She earned her Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and Hispanic Studies from Trent University, her Master of Arts in Comparative Literature from University of Western Ontario and her LLB from Osgoode Hall Law School. Maud was called to the Ontario Bar in 2007.

Maud is a Canadian with a proud West African heritage, having immigrated from Ghana with her parents when she was 10 years old. Her favorite people are her husband (Marty) and young two children (Thomas and Simone) and she is eagerly awaiting the arrival of the newest family member, a labradoodle puppy.

Kristen Riess Senior Legal Counsel

Kristen Riess is Senior Legal Counsel with The Bank of Nova Scotia as part of its litigation group. In her role, she manages litigation on behalf of the Bank and its subsidiaries and provides legal advice on a variety of regulatory and civil litigation matters. Prior to her current role, Kristen practiced as a commercial litigator in one of Canada’s largest full service law firms with a focus on banking and securities litigation. Kristen has an expansive litigation experience, having appeared at all levels of Ontario courts as well as in proceedings before the Ontario Securities Commission, Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada, and the Mutual Fund Dealers Association of Canada.

Kristen has an Honours Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Queen’s University and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Windsor. She summered and articled at Borden Ladner Gervais LLP and was called to the Ontario Bar in 2012.

Kristen lives in Toronto with her husband (Darryl), stepson (Cole) and cat (Gunther) and is actively litigating the issue of whether to get a dog with her family (Kristen and her stepson are the applicants, her husband and cat are the respondents).

Julia Shin Doi General Counsel and Secretary of the Board of Governors

Julia Shin Doi is General Counsel and Secretary of the Board of Governors of Ryerson University. As an Executive Group member, she provides legal and governance advice and has operational responsibility for access to information, privacy, records management, and compliance. Julia leads a team of lawyers and professionals, and advises the board.

Julia is also a member of the Board of Directors of Ryerson Futures Inc. and a past member of the national Board of Canadian Universities Reciprocal Insurance Exchange.

Julia is an adjunct professor at Osgoode Hall Law School where she has taught Legal Drafting since 2001, and at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Law, where she teaches Applied Contract Law in the LL.M. program. She is also an instructor in Ryerson’s Law Practice Program. Her past roles include: director of the Osgoode Business Clinic, assistant director of the Osgoode LL.M. in Business Law, and instructor of Osgoode Professional Development's Commercial Legal Drafting Workshop. Julia teaches contract drafting to lawyers through the Canadian Corporate Counsel Association, Spring Training Workshop. She is an Executive in Residence for the Certified In-House Counsel - Canada designation offered by the Canadian Corporate Counsel Association and University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management.

Edona C. Vila

Edona Vila

Edona defends corporations, insurers, and public institutions in claims arising from consumer products, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, professional negligence, disability insurance, and construction disputes. She is committed to providing strategic and pragmatic solutions in every case through an integrated blend of preparation and understanding of her client's business. Edona regularly advocates on behalf of clients and has appeared before all levels of court in Ontario, including the Ontario Court of Appeal.

Edona's previous legal experience includes working within the in-house legal departments of a global pharmaceutical company and two leading Ontario hospitals. Prior to becoming a lawyer, Edona worked as a Management Consultant with a focus in the health care industry and as a Medical Radiation Technologist at five teaching and community hospitals in Ontario.

Edona's academic training in life and medical radiation sciences, and graduate degree in management of innovation, assist her in the defence of claims involving complex scientific and technical factual matrix.

In addition to serving as a mentor to law students at BLG, Edona enjoys contributing to the legal community. She has a special interest in the intersection of innovation and the law, as well as promoting diversity and inclusion in the profession. She serves on the Board of the Toronto Lawyers' Association
