Jaye Hooper

Jaye Hooper has practiced in Ottawa since her call to the bar in 2001. Jaye has extensive trial experience as well as dozens of appearances on motions and appeals. Jaye has appeared before all levels of court including the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court of Canada. Jaye is an active member in the legal community. She served as President on the executive of the County of Carleton Law Association (CCLA) for the 2012-2013 term and continues to participate in various committees including the Federation of Law Associations (FOLA), a provincial body representing the interests of the practicing bar in Ontario. Jaye is the past Chair of FOLA. Personally, Jaye and her husband Paul have a very rich life enjoying their four children. Jaye lives in the Westboro community and has been active in local initiatives including the rebuilding of Broadview Public School.

Scott Maidment

Scott Maidment is one of Canada's leading litigation counsel. He has appeared before trial and appellate courts across Canada and before arbitration tribunals in Canada and the United States. Scott's strengths as an advocate have been recognized by his inclusion in the Lexpert/American Lawyer Guide to the Leading 500 Lawyers in Canada, the Lexpert Guide to the Leading US/Canada Cross-Border Litigation Lawyers in Canada, and the Lexpert/Report on Business - Leading Litigation Lawyers, Best Lawyers, Chambers Canada, Euromoney's Guide to the World's Leading Product Liability Lawyers, The International Who's Who of Life Sciences Lawyers, and The International Who's Who of Product Liability Lawyers. Scott has been repeatedly named one of the top 30 product liability lawyers in the world by Legal Media Group's The Best of the Best. Scott is known especially for his work in class actions and complex cases, particularly for companies in the life sciences industry. Scott has served as a trial advocacy instructor for the Advocates' Society, the Attorney General of Canada, and the United Nations. Scott has also served as an Adjunct Professor of trial practice at Osgoode Hall Law School, and has been a Team Leader and Instructor at Osgoode's Intensive Trial Advocacy Workshop. He is also a co-author of Product Liability: Canadian Law and Practice, the comprehensive work on product liability litigation published by Thomson Reuters. Scott enjoys an AV Preeminent Rating from Martindale-Hubbell. He presently serves as the President of The Advocates' Society.

Ted Mann

As one of the founders of Mann Lawyers, Ted Mann has been helping clients with real estate transactions, estate planning, estate matters and insolvency for over 30 years. He has extensive commercial, corporate, and tax law experience. He is also experienced in providing legal advice to individuals, same-sex couples, and organizations in the LGBTQ community. Ted graduated from Osgoode Hall in 1978 and was called to the Ontario Bar in 1980. He practiced law in Toronto and Prince Edward Island prior to moving to Ottawa in 1987. Beyond his law practice, he is also passionate about life—enjoying swimming, running, pilates, skiing, kayaking and hiking. He is active in local theatre and music, frequently taking part in the annual Great Canadian Theatre Company – County of Carleton Law Association Lawyers’ Play. Ted holds the office of President of the Board of the County of Carleton Law Association. He is Chair of the Board of Directors for the Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind and is a past Chair of the Ottawa Chamber Music Society Board. He has also been an Adjunct Professor at the University of Ottawa Faculty of Law for over 15 years, teaching Bankruptcy and Insolvency.

Malcolm Mercer Treasurer, Partner

Malcolm M. Mercer was re-elected as Treasurer for a second term by the Law Society’s governing body on June 27, 2019. The Treasurer is the top-elected official of the Law Society, which regulates Ontario’s lawyers and paralegals in the public interest. Elected as a bencher in 2011, 2015 and 2019, he became Treasurer in June 2018. Prior to that, he served as Chair of the Advertising and Fee Arrangements Issues Working Group, Chair of the Professional Regulation Committee and Co-Chair of the Alternative Business Structures Working Group. He also served on numerous other Law Society committees, task forces and working groups and was an active member of the Law Society Tribunal. Committed to issues of legal ethics, he is a member of the Canadian Association for Legal Ethics and Co-Chair of the CBA-FLSC Ethics Forum. He is also an adjunct professor at Osgoode Hall Law School at York University, where he teaches legal ethics. In 2013, he was recognized by the Canadian Bar Association with the prestigious Louis St. Laurent award. He is a former director of Pro Bono Law Ontario and is currently Chair of the board of the Victorian Order of Nurses Canada. He is also a member of the Immigration Appeal Division of the Immigration and Refugee Board. In 2014, he was voted one of the Canadian Lawyer’s Top 25 Most Influential Lawyers. Treasurer Mercer was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1984 after receiving an LLB from the University of Toronto (1982). He also holds a B.Sc., in systems design and engineering (1977). He is a partner in McCarthy Tétrault LLP’s Litigation Group in Toronto, with a focus on commercial and corporate matters and professional negligence. He was the firm’s General Counsel and is the former co-leader of its National Litigation Practice Group.

Colin Stevenson

Colin Stevenson is a certified specialist in civil litigation who has experience in basically every facet of that field. These days, at the helm of Stevenson Whelton LLP (SWMS) – a litigation boutique that he founded and that currently employs 14 lawyers in four locations – he spends most of his time in ADR real estate and construction-related litigation, commercial litigation, fraud litigation, employment litigation, class actions and international law. In 2015, Colin launched his complementary practice as a mediator and arbitrator with a view to resolving disputes efficiently, expeditiously and economically. As OBA President, Colin is leading the organization for the 2019-2020 term, focussing on advancing legal innovation and technology in practice.

Susanne Sviergula

Susanne Sviergula is a partner at Cavanagh LLP whose practice is focused on professional liability, insurance defence and employment law, acting for both institutional and individual clients. A graduate of both the University of Ottawa and the University of Windsor, she was called to the bar in 2001. Susanne has been an active member of the County of Carleton Law Association, the Advocates’ Society and the Ontario Bar Association throughout her career. She is also a regular volunteer at Law Help Ontario. One of her proudest accomplishments however is having run both the 2016 and 2017 Boston Marathon (with a not so secret desire of making it a hat trick in the future).
