Jaye Hooper has practiced in Ottawa since her call to the bar in 2001. Jaye has extensive trial experience as well as dozens of appearances on motions and appeals. Jaye has appeared before all levels of court including the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court of Canada. Jaye is an active member in the legal community. She served as President on the executive of the County of Carleton Law Association (CCLA) for the 2012-2013 term and continues to participate in various committees including the Federation of Law Associations (FOLA), a provincial body representing the interests of the practicing bar in Ontario. Jaye is the past Chair of FOLA. Personally, Jaye and her husband Paul have a very rich life enjoying their four children. Jaye lives in the Westboro community and has been active in local initiatives including the rebuilding of Broadview Public School.
The Honourable Marc R. Labrosse, was appointed a judge of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice (Ottawa) in January 2014. Justice Labrosse received a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Ottawa in 1994 and was called to the Ontario Bar in 1996. He practised with the Ottawa law firm of Vice & Hunter since 1996. His main practise areas were municipal law, civil litigation and corporate law. Mr. Justice Labrosse has been a member of l’Association des juristes d’expression française de l’Ontario since 1995 and a member of the Carleton County Law Association since 1996. He has served as an instructor for the Bar Admissions Course and been a part-time professor with the Faculty of Law, University of Ottawa. Since being appointed, Justice Labrosse has regularly been sitting on civil, family and criminal matters in both official languages. He is the local administrative judge for the Divisional Court in Ottawa.
A frequent speaker at the civil litigation conference, Mr. Justice Calum MacLeod has been a judge of the Superior Court of Justice since June of 2016 and had been a master in that court since November of 2008. He is a graduate of Queen’s University (B.A., 1977 and LL.B., 1980) and was called to the bar in 1983. Prior to his appointment as a master, he practiced civil litigation and dispute resolution and had extensive experience as a neutral. He had been a mediator, arbitrator, fact finder and deputy judge. Over the course of his career as a judicial officer, Justice MacLeod authored many decisions concerning discovery, production and civil procedure and has heard scores of summary judgment motions. He case manages complex commercial cases and class actions. Justice MacLeod has a keen interest in court reform and legal education and has served on many committees and working groups including Sedona Canada and the civil rules committee. He is frequently called upon to speak to lawyers and judges in Ontario and in other jurisdictions.
Marc is a founding member of Forget Smith, a boutique litigation firm. His practice focuses primarily on defending claims related to bodily injury, accident benefits, automobile, professional liability and claims related to construction. He represents local and national insurance companies as well as individual and corporate clients in other areas of litigation such as estate litigation. Marc has also developed a subrogation practice and he has been able to achieve cost-effective recoveries for his clients. Marc is fluently bilingual and he promotes access to justice for French-speaking people in the province. He is the Treasury and a member of the Board of Directors of L’Association des juristes d’expression française de l’Ontario. He is also a member of the Attorney General’s Access to Justice in French Advisory Committee, a permanent committee created to provide advice and guidance to the Attorney General regarding current issues connected to access to justice in French.
Justice Heather J. Williams was appointed to the Ontario Superior Court of Justice in Ottawa in May, 2017 after practising civil litigation in Ottawa for more than 25 years. Justice Williams practised with Cavanagh Williams LLP (which now goes by some other name) and before that, with Nelligan O’Brien Payne (formerly Nelligan Power). Justice Williams is proud to be a past president of the County of Carleton Law Association and a former chair of the CCLA’s Civil Litigation Updated conference at Mont Tremblant.
