This session delves into the mechanics of conducting trials in the post-COVID era, with a particular focus on the recent case McCurdy et al., v. Maille et al., 2024 ONSC 1222 (CanLII).

Alexa Duggan

Alexa Duggan attended Osgoode Hall Law School as a mature student, and now practices plaintiff personal injury law at McKenzie Lake Lawyers LLP. She is a passionate animal advocate, loves nature, and in her spare time she likes to reconnect with the natural world through hiking, biking, remote camping, or spending time at the lake.

Vicki Edgar Partner

Vicki Edgar BA LLB graduated from Western Law and was called to the Bar in1990. She is a partner at Cohen Highley LLP and practices Personal Injury Law.

Spencer Nicholson

Justice Spencer Nicholson was born and raised in London, Ontario. He studied life sciences at Queen’s University and then attended Law School at the University of Toronto. Following his articles at Fasken Campbell Godfrey in Toronto, Justice Nicholson returned to London to practice law with his father at the small litigation firm of Nicholson Smith. His practice was primarily focused on insurance defence and plaintiff personal injury litigation. Justice Nicholson was appointed to the Superior Court of Justice in September of 2020, in the Southwest Region, with his chambers in London, Ontario. The Judges in that region preside over criminal, civil and family law matters, which he finds challenging and exciting work. He is pleased to be able to contribute to the community where he was born and always called home.

Brian Sunohara

Brian Sunohara is a partner at Rogers Partners LLP and has been with the firm since 2003. He handles a wide variety of civil litigation matters, including claims involving occupiers’ liability, product liability, motor vehicle accidents, and property damage. Brian has appeared at all levels of court in Ontario. He has been counsel in several trials, arbitrations, administrative tribunal hearings, and appeals. Brian is named in The Best Lawyers in Canada in the areas of Insurance Law and Personal Injury Litigation. He has spoken at various continuing legal education conferences, including on Surveillance and Social Media Evidence at Trial and Lessons on Trial Practice. He is currently a member of task forces of The Advocates’ Society addressing changes to the Rules of Civil Procedure and refusals motions.

 

Jim Virtue

Jim is an experience insurance and personal injury litigator and educator who has served as an Adjunct Professor at Western University and has taught seminars on trial advocacy.

Jim is a partner and long-team leader / practitioner at Siskinds. His skills in the insurance sector are highly regarded, and he was named to the Best Lawyers in Canada list for Insurance Law. Jim is also a respected educator with contributions in a range of roles, from adjunct professor at Western Law School to work with the Bar Admission course and seminars on Trial Advocacy techniques.
