The speakers review the entire life of the file, from bail through to trial issues and sentencing, referring to relevant legislation and case law.
Justice Jonathan Brunet was called to the Bar in 1990 and joined the federal Department of Justice as counsel in civil litigation and immigration and refugee law in Toronto. In 1992, he was counsel for the Department of Foreign Affairs in Ottawa. Since 1993, he has been an assistant Crown attorney for Ontario's Ministry of the Attorney General with the exception of a three-year secondment to the federal Department of Justice. Justice Brunet has taught criminal law and procedure in French and English at the University of Ottawa since 1997, and taught criminal law at Carleton University. He has authored and co-authored four texts dealing with criminal law issues and has assisted the National Judicial Institute in setting up bail practice training for justices of the peace. He has been a board member of the Canadian Mental Health Association, Ontario East-Champlain district and of the Canada-Ethiopia Coalition for Aids Prevention and Education in Ottawa. Justice Brunet was appointed to the Bench in August 2011.
Fady graduated from the University of Alberta Faculty of Law in 2015 and clerked at the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta, where he worked closely with the Justices of the Court. After clerking, he articled at a prominent defence firm in Edmonton and joined as an associate after being called to the bar in 2016. Fady is a member of the Law Societies of Ontario, Alberta and the Northwest Territories. In his free time, Fady is an avid target shooter and hunter and has a strong interest in firearms law as well as offences arising from the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act. Fady is fluent in both English and Arabic and is able to assist clients in either language.
