Five Rules for Clear Legal Writing

Paula Puddy, HBA LLB MBA

Consider the following paradox:

The better you understand a subject, the harder it is to explain that subject to someone else.

This idea summarizes the research of a famous professor from Harvard, named Steven Pinker. He concludes that writing poses an intense challenge because our clients and other readers lack technical knowledge about our subject matter. He goes on to say that "When you know something, it is hard to imagine what it is like for someone else not to know it."

In this program, you will learn about the five situations where a reader could misinterpret your writing. By the end of the program, you will be able to visualize your own writing through the eyes of your clients and colleagues. This mindset will ensure that you avoid ambiguity.
