Who’s Driving This Thing?! Autonomous Vehicles & the Legal/Insurance Industry

Paula Puddy, HBA LLB MBA

Autonomous vehicles (AV’s) aka driverless cars are a game-changer for both the automotive and insurance industry and, arguably, society. Despite several high profile deaths involving an AV Uber and Tesla in 2018, driverless buses and cars are being tested on the roads in Canada and elsewhere.

What will the future hold?

Roger Watts speaks about this trendy topic in his presentation entitled, "Who’s Driving this Thing?!". His presentation thoroughly reviews the history of the autonomous vehicle and how they work. He comments on the current legislative status of AV’s in the USA, Canada and the UK.. Video 24:37 to 26:51

Finally, Roger draws several conclusions and makes several predictions on the impact of AV’s on the automotive and insurance industries. They are as follows:

  • Safer roads due to a reduction in collision frequency
  • Higher vehicle repair costs
  • An increase in product liability claims
  • Difficulty determining liability in AV crashes -is it the software designer, manufacturer, maintenance crew?
  • Creation of new insurance products
  • Building of AV only commuter roads (banning human drivers)

I guess we will see in the next 20 to 25 years!
