Investigating Insurance Claims with Geosocial Data

Paula Puddy, HBA LLB MBA

The Toronto Lawyers Association (TLA) hosts this webinar presented by Jacqueline Batista, covering the impact of geosocial data, and how it is changing the face of risk management and insurance claim investigations.

Jacqueline Batista explains what geosocial data is, how this type of information is used to investigate insurance claims of all kinds, and the importance of navigating the legal and privacy implications of collecting data from openly available sources across the internet. The presenter examines how social media content, such as photographs, videos, and posts at specific locations, can assist in investigating claims. She uses case specific examples to demonstrate the benefits of this technology and its application in furthering insurance claims investigations.

Jacqueline Batista emphasizes professional and ethical considerations that arise in the collection and analysis of data from social media, providing guidance on how to identify the red flags that determine when and where geosocial data can be helpful. She also illustrates how evidence can be uncovered and leveraged in a variety of scenarios, educating us on the proper preservation, authentication, and presentation of geosocial evidence in court.
