Heterosexism, Homophobia, Cissexism & Transphobia

Paula Puddy, HBA LLB MBA

As you know, you are required to complete 3 hours of Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) accredited continuing professional development by the end of 2020.

Despite the "mandatory" nature of this requirement, I have enjoyed learning about EDI over the last few years. In particular, I am more knowledgeable about the many topics covered by EDI such as bias, power, privilege, and culture. I have a better understanding of racialized people and the challenges they faced and continue to face. I am endeavouring to treat everyone with dignity and respect. And, I thought I was a people-person!

So, even though the Law Society of Ontario’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion initiative was implemented to "address racism and discrimination" in the profession, I feel this requirement has impacted me positively.

One of the EDI programs I enjoyed is Deirdre Pike’s presentation entitled "Creating 2SLGBTQ Positive Space". She explains many concepts and provides practical tips in a candid and humourous manner. They include:

  • What does the 2S stand for, in front of the commonly referenced LGBTQ+ initials;
  • What pronouns should I use?
  • Stay away from traditional classifications and "binary" labels such as husband and wife, and use more inclusive language such as "partner";
  • The difference between sex, gender, orientation and expression;
  • Consider the impact of your words, not just the intention;
  • Tolerance only applies to lactose, not people!
  • And much more!

After watching her training, I am motivated to embrace the challenge of creating an inclusive and welcoming space where human rights are respected – a 2SLGBTQ Positive Space!
