Carol Cochrane

Carol Cochrane has been with the law firm of Low, Murchison Radnoff LLP since her call to the Bar many moons ago (although back at that time, it was just “Low Murchison.”) Carol restricts her practice to the field of family law, maintaining a mix of matrimonial litigation, domestic contract negotiations, mediation and arbitration. This year marks Carol’s fifth and final year serving as the moderator of the Fabulous Spousal Support Panel. Why final you ask? Well, after 35 years with LMR, Carol has decided to join the ranks of the unemployed at the end of this year, with the plan being for her to enjoy her retirement as much as she has her years of family law practice in Ottawa.

Justice Tracy Engelking

Tracy Engelking was appointed a judge of the Superior Court of Justice and a member of the Family Court in Ottawa in March 2016. Prior to being appointed, Justice Engelking was a senior counsel with the Children’s Aid Society in Ottawa. She was also a partner with McKecknie Atnikov Scholbert & Engelking until 1998 and a partner with O’Connor Lavigne & Pegg until 1995. Justice Engelking received her LLB from Osgoode Hall, York University in 1994, and as called to the Bar in 1992.

Justice John Johnston

The Honourable John M. Johnston, was appointed a Judge of the Superior Court of Justice of Ontario (Brockville) on September 30, 2010. He regularly sits throughout the East Region and sits regularly in Family Court in various locations. Mr. Justice Johnston received a Bachelor of Arts Hons.(B.A.) from Queen’s University and a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from the University of Calgary. He was admitted to the Ontario Bar in 1989. Mr. Justice Johnston has practiced law in Brockville, Ontario: he has been a sole practitioner since 1996. He was a partner at Beale, MacIntosh, Lewis and Johnston (1991-1996) and at Beale, MacIntosh, Lewis, O’Shaughnessy and Johnston (1989-1991). His main areas of practice include criminal law, family, and child welfare. Mr. Justice Johnston is currently Chair of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Mental Health Association, Leeds-Grenville Branch and member since 2001.He was a past member of Child and Youth Wellness, Leeds-Grenville and Career Services, Brockville. He was President of the Leeds-Grenville Law Association (2006-2007) and member of the Legal Aid Committee in Brockville since 2002 to 2010.

Justice Mark Shelston

The Honourable Mark P. Shelston, was appointed a judge of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, Family Court Branch, in Ottawa on March 26th, 2015. Since April 2017, he is the Local Administrative Judge for the Family Branch of the Superior Court and co-chair of the Superior Court Annual Justice Heidi Polowin Conference in Child Protection.

Fluently bilingual, he received a Bachelor of Civil Law in 1981 and a Bachelor of Laws in 1982 from McGill University. He was admitted to the Bar of Ontario in 1984 and to the Barreau du Quebec in 1987 practicing family law in both jurisdictions.

Mr. Justice Shelston was a member of the Ontario Superior Court, Family Law Bench and Bar Committee from 2008 until his appointment and was a frequent presenter at conferences by the Canadian Bar Association and the Carleton County Law Association on family law issues. He was a sessional lecturer on Quebec Civil Procedure at the University of Ottawa (Civil Law) from 1997 to 2002. He acted as a mediator and arbitrator in family law matters. He was listed as one of the best lawyers in family law in Ottawa by Best Lawyers in Canada for the years 2012, 2013 and 2014.
