Mr. Van Ert will review practical solutions to various tech issues that affect a litigator’s practice and relationship with clients, including best practices for retainer agreements and dealing with electronic communications and sharing information over email or the cloud.

Mr. Leclair will provide an overview of the various risks associated with tech, such as phishing scams cyber risks for lawyers and law firms. He will also review best practices in managing online security for lawyers and their clients.

Mr. Udell will explore best practices for cloud computing and commentary on what lawyers should be thinking about when moving to the cloud (e.g. set-up, costs, security protocols). LSO CPD Accreditation Criteria 3.15 and 3.17.

Adam Aldersley

Adam was called to the Bar in Ontario in 2015, and now practices in civil litigation, including personal injury. While completing his articles with Connolly Obagi LLP, Adam participated in an unprecedented 5 trials, including one complete jury trial. Adam's drive to be a litigator began in law school, where he focused on developing his advocacy skills. He earned his law degree from the University of British Columbia, where he represented UBC Law as an oralist at the Laskin Moot in both 2013 and 2014. Adam was also awarded the Boyd Ferris Memorial Prize for excellence in oral advocacy. Prior to attending law school, Adam worked in the Federal Public Service, after earning an undergraduate degree in Political Science (Honours) from Carleton University. During his undergraduate degree, Adam worked in customer service, where he developed the interpersonal skills required to guide you and your case through each stage in the litigation process. Adam is currently a member of the County of Carleton Law Association, Ontario Trial Lawyers Association and the Law Society of Upper Canada. He also engages in a number of charitable and leisurely activities in his spare time, including the annual Mustaches for Kids fundraising campaign.

Ray Leclair

Ray Leclair joined Lawyers’ Professional Indemnity Company (LawPRO) in June of 2008 in the role of Vice President, TitlePLUS, and as of May, 2012 became Vice President, Public Affairs, responsible for government relations efforts at LawPRO.

Formerly General Counsel for the Kanata Research Park Corporation, a development company and major commercial landlord in Ottawa, Ray has practised in both major national law firms and as a sole practitioner, and was a part-time professor at the University of Ottawa Law School and Cité Collégiale instructing the French language portion of the real estate law course. He also served for 15 years as the Ottawa senior instructor for the French and English Real Estate Sections of the Bar Admission Course and member of the Law Society of Upper Canada’s Solicitor Advisory Group, Licensing Process.

Called to the bar in 1984, Ray is Past-Chair and remains an active participant of both the National Real Property Section of the Canadian Bar Association and of the Real Property Section of the Ontario Bar Association, past Co-Chair and remains a member of the Working Group on Lawyers & Real Estate, and President of the Ontario Real Estate Lawyers Association (ORELA).  Former member of the Ontario Bar Association Council, past executive member of CBA’s National Sections Council, past member of its budget committee and formerly Vice President of the North American Bar-related® Title Insurers, past President of the Advisory Committee for the Cité Collégiale Legal Assistants Program. Ray volunteered as Manager of the fundraiser TOM* MensFashion4Hope and a VIP & Sponsor Relations Officer for semi-annual Toronto Men’s Fashion Week (TOM*). Ray is and has been a frequent speaker/presenter, in French or English, in numerous programs on various real estate and other law related topics in Canada and the United States.

Gib van Ert

After ten years practising civil litigation at a leading Vancouver firm, Gib van Ert spent three years as Executive Legal Officer at the Supreme Court of Canada. He now practises civil litigation and public law in Ottawa and Vancouver. He has served as secretary of the National Judicial Institute; director of the International Commission of Jurists Canada; and is currently the director of the Canadian Council on International Law. Gib is the author of the leading text on the use of public international law by Canadian courts, as well as other works published by Irwin Law, Cambridge University Press, Oxford University Press, the Canadian Yearbook of International Law and the Canadian Bar Review. He is a member of The Advocates’ Society, the Supreme Court Advocacy Institute, the Canadian Council on International Law, the American Society of International Law and the County of Carleton Law Association. He serves as the Chair of the CCLA Technology Committee. Gib served as a law clerk in the Supreme Court of Canada and the Court of Appeal for British Columbia. He was called to the Bar of British Columbia in 2004 and the Bar of Ontario in 2018.
