This topic will cover both substantive issues and professionalism content. The substantive part will involve an update regarding the caselaw as it pertains to impaired/over 80 driving.

Professionalism content includes:

  • Duty of competence in providing legal advice to those charged with impaired driving offences, a rapidly changing a rapidly changing area of the law. Also duty of competence to those detained in police custody
  • Ethical duties of candour and fairness in dealing with opposing counsel and the court in defending these charges and bringing forward Charter arguments

Anna Brylewski

Anna Brylewski obtained her B.A. (Hons) in Psychology from Carleton University and obtained her LL.B. from the University of Ottawa. Anna was called to the bar in 2010. After completing her articles at the Law Office of Rosalind E. Conway, Anna continued to work there as an associate before joining her current firm X-Copper (formerly Hawtin Dotsikas Lawyers). As an associate lawyer at X-Copper, Anna practices exclusively in criminal law with a focus on driving related offences. Anna is a member of the County of Carleton Law Association, Defence Counsel Association of Ottawa and the Criminal Lawyers Association. Anna is fluent in Polish.

Rosalind Conway

Rosalind Conway is a certified specialist in criminal law. She graduated from the University of Toronto Law School, worked as an Assistant Crown Attorney, and is in private practice in Ottawa. She also works part-time as a Deputy Judge in the Ottawa Small Claims Court. Rosalind is a long-time Trustee of the County of Carleton Law Association, and a past president of the Defence Counsel Association of Ottawa and the Bora Laskin Law Society.

Justice Stuart Konyer

Justice Stuart Konyer graduated from the University of Ottawa law school in 1995. He then articled for the criminal defence firm of Barnes, Raganold in Ottawa and was called to the bar in 1997. He was a sole practitioner until 1999, when he joined with Sean May to form the firm of May & Konyer, where he practiced criminal law exclusively. Throughout his career as a lawyer, he served numerous positions on the executive of the Defence Counsel Association of Ottawa, including as President. He was appointed to the Ontario Court of Justice in 2014, and presides in his hometown of Lindsay.
