Sunil Gurmukh is an Assistant Professor and the Assistant Dean (Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Decolonization) at Western Law. He is teaching courses on racial profiling in policing and hate speech. He is also leading the Hidden Racial Profiling Project and conducting research into hate crimes. He previously served as a Visiting Lecturer and Adjunct Professor at Western Law. He holds a B.Comm., Hons (First Class) (Smith School of Business, Queens University) and an LL.B. (Faculty of Law, Western University). Sunil has over 13 years of experience as a human rights lawyer. He has worked on significant human rights cases at the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario and all levels of court, including the Supreme Court of Canada. In addition to litigation, his human rights work has included: policy development, partnerships, advisory work, engagement of equity-deserving groups, presentations, publications, teaching and research across many prohibited grounds of discrimination. Sunil has received numerous awards for his human rights work, including Western University’s Young Alumni Award (2021) and Precedent Magazine’s Precedent Setter Award (2016). In 2019, he was named as one of country’s top 25 most influential lawyers by Canadian Lawyer Magazine He is currently on leave from his role of Counsel at the Ontario Human Rights Commission (OHRC). Prior to joining the OHRC in 2011, he worked at the African Canadian Legal Clinic as a Staff Lawyer.
Deedre Turner currently serves as the Manager of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion at Lerners LLP, where she orchestrates the development and execution of strategies and programs to elevate the firm’s EDI practices. With a finely tuned skill set in transforming business operations and nurturing organizational cultures, Deedre focuses on aligning Lerners’ firm-wide DEIB goals with emerging trends and challenges. Her collaborative approach extends across departments, including close coordination with Human Resources, Marketing, and Professional Resources, as well as active involvement with the firm’s Diversity and Inclusion Committee in both an internal and outward-facing capacity. With a robust background in human resources leadership and change management spanning over a decade, from handling complex human rights issues in the workplace to collective bargaining, Deedre brings a wealth of experience to her current role. Previously, she served as the Diversity and Inclusion Lead in the Strategic Human Resources Branch at the Ministry of Environment, Conservation & Parks. There, she led initiatives to promote a culture of belonging through the design, development, and implementation of antiracism action plans, education frameworks, EDI-focused initiatives and policy analysis. Deedre’s career also includes roles such as Team Lead & Manager of Workplace Discrimination & Harassment Prevention at the Ministry of Public Business and Service Delivery, as well as Staffing and Employee Relations Manager roles at the Elementary Teaching Office of the Toronto District School Board. Complementing her professional journey, Deedre is dedicated to ongoing education to deepen her expertise. She holds a Post Graduate Certificate in Human Resource Management from George Brown College, a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from The College of Wooster, Ohio and is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Laws [LLB] from the University of London.
