The panel will cover the law regarding when judges can rely on common sense inferences. Panelists will discuss how to prepare your client to testify, and how to explain sexual assault law to your client. Paolo is a partner with Langevin Morris Smith LLP. He graduated from the University of Ottawa in 2006 and immediately commenced his articles at Langevin Morris Smith LLP. He then joined the firm as an associate lawyer in 2007. Paolo’s practice consists of a variety of legal disciplines, including criminal defence litigation, civil litigation and administrative law. He has appeared before the Ontario Court of Justice, Ontario Superior Court of Justice and the Court of Appeal for Ontario, along with numerous boards and tribunals. Paolo is a member of the Canadian Bar Association, the Defence Counsel Association of Ottawa and the Carleton County Law Association. He is actively involved in the legal community. Paolo is currently serving as the secretary for the Defence Counsel Association of Ottawa. He has attended as a speaker at a number of legal conferences and seminars. Paolo is also an instructor with the Department of Laws at Carleton University where he has taught law since 2009.
Kim graduated from the University of Ottawa in 2007 with a B.Soc.Sc. in Political Science and Criminology. She earned her LL.B., also from the University of Ottawa, in 2010 and was called to the Bar in June 2011. Kim practices in association with Shore Davis Johnston exclusively in the area of criminal law. She has represented clients charged with a broad range of offences and has experience assisting clients in the Mental Health Court, including issues of Not Criminally Responsible (“NCR”) and Fitness to Stand Trial. Kim is also a Founder, Director, and current Secretary of the Barristers for a Better Bytown, a local charity which aims to give back to members of our community who are in need, including at risk youth, the homeless, and others.
Karin Stein graduated from the University of Ottawa Law School in 2004 and articled with a full-service boutique firm in Ottawa. After her call to the bar in 2005, Karin joined Carroll & Wallace where she practices criminal and quasi-criminal law. She is a member of the DCAO executive.
